Community Garden - about us

Located in the south western boundary area behind the Greek and Turkish buildings, the community garden is a delightful space which is currently being developed an organic garden open to the community for participation.

The Addison Road Community Garden is looking for new members. If you are keen to get into some organic gardening - contact 02 9569 7056

The circle has turned again and by March 2007 the Board have begun a new volunteer drive to manage the area. There has been some debate over whether a licence fee would be the best way of sorting out who is really committed to growing and managing the garden.

On the other hand this would be a big change from the free gardening experience up until now. So the following notice has been issued by the Centre Board member Natalie McCarthy who is supervising this initiative:

Addison Rd Community Garden, Marrickville

Where: Addison Rd Centre, Marrickville,

When: Sunday May 6th 2007

Start time: 10 am

Addison Road Centre is restarting the Community Garden as a community resource and is currently looking for volunteers and local groups to become involved.

There is great potential for the development of future sustainable and environmental gardening projects. Thanks to a grant received by members of the previous group, the Garden is to be watered by rainwater harvested from the rooves of two adjacent buildings and the irrigation is currently being installed.

Unfortunately, after having been left for many months the Garden has been taken over by noxious weeds. Some clearing has begun and well established trees such as Lily Pilly, Citrus, Mulberry, Almond, Olive, have been uncovered. Numerous stripey green marsh frogs were also discovered to be using the garden and remaining ponds as a home.

Some project ideas so far are:

  • - Organic gardening/Permaculture
  • - Herbs
  • - Bush Tucker Garden
  • - Re-establishing ponds for Stripey Marsh Frogs
  • - Native Beehives(stingless)
  • - Compost workshops
  • - Local school involvement

The gardening group are meeting the first Sunday of the month next one being May 6 to continue work on containing the weeds, establishing paths and new garden beds and developing project ideas.

To this end the following text ran in the local suburban freebie newspaper The Glebe 22nd March 2007 calling for volunteers. The headline below suggests confused geography given the Food Forest Community Garden is in Marrickville not Glebe, but their intentions were good in raising this volunteer opportunity for green thumbs:
